Despite widespread worry, major health organisations say there is no proven link between the aluminium in antiperspirants and cancer or Alzheimer’s disease. The studies that raised concerns have not been backed up by strong evidence. So the honest answer is: aluminium in deodorant isn’t established as harmful. Many people still choose to avoid it — as a personal preference, or simply because they’d rather let their body sweat naturally — and that’s a perfectly valid reason to go aluminium-free. Here’s a fair look at the facts.aluminium-free natural deodorant as an alternative to antiperspirant

Where the worry came from

First, what aluminium is doing in an antiperspirant at all: aluminium salts temporarily block sweat ducts to reduce how much you sweat. That’s the entire mechanism behind “antiperspirant.”

Concern grew from a few directions — some early studies detected aluminium in breast tissue, others speculated about links to Alzheimer’s disease, and the idea spread widely online. Those questions are understandable, and it’s reasonable to want answers before putting something on your skin daily.

What the evidence actually says

Here’s the honest, balanced picture from major health bodies:

  • Cancer: Cancer Research UK and the American Cancer Society state there is no convincing scientific evidence that antiperspirants containing aluminium cause breast cancer. The studies suggesting a link have been small or methodologically limited, and larger reviews have not confirmed one.
  • Alzheimer’s: Although aluminium was investigated decades ago, Alzheimer’s charities say the evidence does not support a causal link between everyday aluminium exposure (including antiperspirants) and Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Regulators continue to permit aluminium salts in antiperspirants at established levels.

In short: the headlines outran the science. If you use an aluminium antiperspirant, the evidence does not say you’re harming yourself.

We think it matters to say that clearly — even though we make and sell aluminium-free deodorant. Overstating a health risk to sell a product isn’t honest, and you deserve the real picture.

So why choose aluminium-free at all?

Plenty of good reasons remain to prefer a natural, aluminium-free deodorant — they’re just not “aluminium will hurt you”:

  • You’d rather sweat normally. Sweating is how your body regulates temperature. Some people simply prefer not to block that process, and a deodorant lets them manage odour instead. Find our more in our blog Deodorant vs Antiperspirant: What’s the Difference?
  • Personal preference and peace of mind. If you’d rather keep your routine simple and free of ingredients you’re unsure about, that’s a legitimate choice.
  • Packaging and waste. Most antiperspirants come in plastic or aerosol packaging. Our deodorant comes in a plastic-free, compostable cardboard tube.
  • Skin feel. Many people find a nourishing balm with shea butter and coconut oil kinder on the skin than a synthetic antiperspirant.
  • No white marks or clothing stains from aluminium residue — a common everyday annoyance.

What our aluminium-free deodorant offers

Our Battle Green Natural Deodorant Balm is aluminium-free, paraben-free, PETA-certified vegan and cruelty-free, made in Wales in a compostable tube. It controls odour with sodium bicarbonate, absorbs moisture with arrowroot, and nourishes skin with shea butter and coconut oil, scented only with pure essential oils. Our Mandarin & Neroli deodorant is a customer favourite and it even won Gold at the Veggie Awards 2023.

Remember it’s a deodorant, not an antiperspirant — so it manages odour while letting you sweat normally, rather than blocking sweat the way aluminium does. If baking soda doesn’t suit your skin, our bicarb-free deodorant bar is the gentle alternative.natural aluminium-free deodorant balm with shea butter and essential oils

Frequently asked questions

Does aluminium in deodorant cause cancer? According to Cancer Research UK and the American Cancer Society, there is no convincing evidence that aluminium in antiperspirants causes breast cancer.

Is aluminium in deodorant linked to Alzheimer’s? Alzheimer’s charities say the evidence does not support a link between everyday aluminium exposure, including antiperspirants, and Alzheimer’s disease.

Then why use aluminium-free deodorant? Usually preference: wanting to sweat normally, avoiding uncertain ingredients, reducing packaging waste, or better skin feel — rather than a proven health risk. We cover this issue more thoroughly in our Switching to Natural Deodorant: The Complete Guide.

What’s the difference between aluminium-free deodorant and antiperspirant? Aluminium is what makes an antiperspirant reduce sweat. An aluminium-free deodorant controls odour instead and lets you sweat normally.

Is natural deodorant healthier? “Healthier” is the wrong frame — the aluminium risk isn’t established. It’s more accurate to say natural deodorant suits people who prefer to avoid aluminium and reduce packaging waste.
