Natural deodorant manages body odour without aluminium, by neutralising the bacteria that cause smell and absorbing a little moisture — rather than blocking your sweat glands the way an antiperspirant does. It won’t stop you sweating, because sweating is a normal, healthy way your body regulates temperature, but a good natural formula keeps you fresh all day. Switching is simple, though some people go through a short adjustment period. This guide covers how it works, how to use it, what to expect, and how to choose the right one.
Natural deodorant vs antiperspirant: the key difference
This is the single most important thing to understand before you switch, because it sets your expectations correctly.
- An antiperspirant uses aluminium salts to temporarily block your sweat glands, so you sweat less.
- A deodorant doesn’t block sweat at all. It works on the odour, by neutralising the bacteria that break sweat down into smell.
So a natural deodorant won’t keep your underarms bone dry — and it isn’t supposed to. Once you know that, you’ll judge it fairly. We’ve explained this fully in our Deodorant vs Antiperspirant: What’s the Difference?
How natural deodorant works
Our Battle Green Natural Deodorant Balm does its job with a short list of plant-based ingredients:
- Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) neutralises odour by making the underarm less hospitable to odour-causing bacteria.
- Arrowroot powder absorbs excess moisture to help you feel drier.
- Organic shea butter and coconut oil nourish the skin and give the balm its smooth glide.
- Soy Bean Wax gives the deodorant its smooth, solid texture, while helping it glide easily over the skin without feeling greasy.
- Pure essential oils provide the scent — and many are naturally antibacterial.
It’s aluminium-free, paraben-free, PETA-certified vegan and cruelty-free, and it comes in a plastic-free cardboard push-up tube you can compost when it’s done.
How to use natural deodorant balm
- Push up gently from the base of the tube to reveal a little balm.
- Apply a few swipes to clean, dry skin.
- Let it absorb for a moment before dressing.
- Reapply as needed if you need a top-up, natural deodorant can be reapplied freely.
- Avoid applying straight after shaving or on broken skin, when the underarm is more sensitive.
- Accidently push up to far? Tap the base of the tube down firmly on a hard surface to make the balm drop back down.
Store in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight. A tip from our customers: applying it “straight from the fridge during a heatwave” feels wonderful and helps it glide on in hot weather.
What to expect when you switch
Some people switch and notice nothing. Others go through a short transition period of a week or two as the body adjusts to no longer having its sweat glands blocked. During that time you might sweat or smell a little more than usual — it passes, and it’s not the deodorant failing. One customer described it well: natural deodorant doesn’t stop you sweating, “but your body gets used to this and actually sweats less over time.” We cover this properly in The Natural Deodorant Transition Period.
Does natural deodorant actually work?
Yes — for most people, once they’re through any adjustment. Our deodorant holds a 4.9 rating across 950+ reviews, including from self-described heavy sweaters and people who’d given up on natural deodorant before. As our customer Hermione says: “Amazing quality, feels so nice on the skin! Also I wanted to give a review after I put it to the test. I had 1 hrs karate practise and I usually do smell if I don’t put deodorant. I used this and I didn’t smell! It’s very strong and great. My lymph nodes swell when I use regular deodorant so I’m so grateful for this. Thank you for making it affordable as well.”

Choosing your scent
Our balm comes in seven scents, all made with pure essential oils:
Lavender & Tea Tree · Lemon & Rose · Grapefruit & Mint · Lime & Vanilla · Orange & Patchouli · Mandarin & Neroli · Violet & Bergamot.
If you’d like a steer, our Mandarin & Neroli won Gold at the Veggie Awards 2023. Not sure which you’ll love? The 20g sample tins are an easy, low-cost way to try a scent first.
Sensitive skin? Choose bicarb-free
Baking soda is an effective natural odour-neutraliser and most people get on with it perfectly. But because it’s mildly alkaline, a minority of people — especially those with sensitive underarms — can find it irritating. If that’s you, we make a dedicated Bicarb-Free Deodorant Bar for sensitive skin that swaps baking soda for gentler ingredients, including magnesium hydroxide, which helps neutralise odour, and kaolin clay, which helps absorb moisture and keep underarms feeling fresh and dry. Just warm the side of the bar against your skin, swipe your pits a couple of times, and you’re good to go!
A word on aluminium
A lot of people come to natural deodorant because they’d rather not use aluminium. It’s worth being clear and honest here: the science does not show a proven link between aluminium in antiperspirants and conditions like cancer. For many people it’s simply a personal preference to avoid it and let the body sweat normally. We lay out the evidence fairly in our blog Is Aluminium in Deodorant Bad?

Frequently asked questions
Does natural deodorant stop you sweating? No — it’s a deodorant, not an antiperspirant. It controls odour rather than blocking sweat, because sweating is a healthy way your body cools itself. Our deodorant also contains arrowroot powder, which helps absorb some moisture and keeps underarms feeling drier.
How long does a natural deodorant last? A little goes a long way, and many customers find that a tube can last a couple of months with daily use. A pea-sized amount of product per armpit is usually enough.
Will I smell during the switch? Many people switch to a natural deodorant without any problems. Occasionally, you may notice more sweating or body odour for a short time while your underarms adjust. If you’ve been using an aluminium-based antiperspirant, it may have been blocking your sweat glands and pores, so your body can take a little time to adjust when you stop. This usually settles within a week or two.
Is natural deodorant suitable for sensitive skin? Most people are fine with our balm, but if baking soda irritates you, choose our bicarb-free bar instead. Our deodorant balm mini tins let you try out the formula first, before committing to a large tube or tin.
Can men use it too? Absolutely — the scents and formulas are unisex. Plenty of our male customers use it daily, including heavy sweaters.
Are your deodorants plastic free? Yes. Our entire cosmetics range is free from plastic. Choose from deodorants in paper tubes or tins. Both can be recycled and the tins can be reused.
