We’re pleased to share that Battle Green has been awarded Gold status by Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) as part of their Plastic Free Communities campaign. This nationwide initiative focuses on reducing single-use plastic at the source and creating lasting change.

Who are Surfers Against Sewage?

Founded in 1990, Surfers Against Sewage is a UK-based charity dedicated to protecting oceans, beaches, and marine wildlife. They are best known for their work campaigning against marine pollution, promoting clean seas, and engaging communities to take action. Through education, advocacy, and community projects, SAS has become one of the most influential voices in marine conservation in the UK.

What is the Plastic Free Communities campaign?

Plastic Free Communities is SAS’s flagship programme for tackling single-use plastic across the country. It brings together businesses, councils, schools, and local communities to make practical changes that reduce plastic at source, rather than just cleaning it up afterwards. The initiative uses a step-by-step framework that encourages meaningful, long-term changes and celebrates the efforts of those making a difference.

Within the programme, businesses and community groups can achieve Bronze, Silver, or Gold status, with Gold being the highest level of recognition. Consequently, each level reflects the changes made, the impact on customers or communities, and the ongoing commitment to reducing plastic.

What Gold status means for Battle Green

Achieving Gold is a significant milestone and recognises businesses that go above and beyond basic plastic swaps. For Battle Green, this has involved:

✨ Making our products and packaging free from single-use plastic;
✨ Embedding low-waste, plastic-free choices into our day-to-day operations;
✨ Encouraging and supporting our customers to make more sustainable swaps;
✨ Playing a small part in the wider movement working towards plastic-free communities.

It’s something we’ve put a lot of thought and care into, and we’re so grateful to our wonderful customers for being a part of it.

Our long-standing support for SAS

Battle Green has proudly supported SAS since 2018 as part of their Ocean Network. The programme that brings together individuals, businesses, and organisations committed to protecting oceans and tackling marine pollution. As part of this support, we’ve sent yearly donations to help fund SAS’s vital work, from beach clean-ups to campaigning for plastic reduction policies.

Being part of the Ocean Network has always been about joining a bigger movement and contributing however we can. Being recognised through the Plastic Free Communities Gold Award feels like a natural extension of that commitment.

Looking ahead

We know there’s always more to do. We’ll continue to strive to improve our practices and reduce plastic wherever possible. We’re so grateful to our customers for supporting us along the way. Every sustainable swap you make helps us make a bigger impact.
